Congratulations! You've taken a leap of faith, jumped in at the deep end, and taken the risk to start your own business.
You are now a "Mumpreneur".
That's the easy part done. Now the hard part is growing your business, staying motivated and managing to do all the mum stuff at the same time!
Let's focus on the motivation because without out that you're not going to get around to doing what it takes to manage and grow your business successfully. Ultimately all motivation is self motivation but it is going to be affected by the people you associate with and their attitude, what you are involved with and the success of others you are exposed to. So don't get in with the wrong crowd!
All professionals commit to Continuous Professional Development and as a "Mumpreneur" you must find a way to learn new skills, gain further knowledge and have the right attitude for success.
Making an investment in some coaching could be one of your best business investments, especially now that we are facing such challenging selling and business conditions.
Here are 3 important areas that you can work on with coaching:
1. Self Discipline
"I want to do ____, but I don't feel like it."
As a "Mumpreneur" it takes a great deal of self-discipline to stick to your business plan and get things done. Now that you are your own boss you must be tough on yourself. Having good self-discipline earns you the respect of your customers, your associates and even your family.
Only you are 100% responsible for what happens in your business.
Accept that responsibility and don't make feeble excuses because you get to make all the rules and have the freedom to make all the decisions. You have taken on the risk of starting your own business so you are only cheating yourself out of success. You owe it to yourself to do what it's going to take to enjoy the rewards and success.
Lack of self discipline will eventually lead to overwhelm, frustration, procrastination, poor customer service and may even put you out of business. Depending on your personality you will either be motivated towards the idea of business success, wealth and recognition or motivated away from the idea of business failure, bankruptcy and shame. Whichever is the most powerful thought for you use it to give you motivation?
2. Take Action
"There's so much to do, I don't know where to start!"
Guess what? There will always be so much to do and you'll never be completely on top of everything.
When running your business aim for managing chaos, NOT creating perfection. It doesn't have to be perfect it just has to be DONE!
You may not realise it but sometimes fear of failure can be stopping you from getting things done. Being afraid that the business success you want won't happen can cause you to put off the important actions required to grow your business.
If you KNEW for certain that everything you want to happen in the next 12 months WILL happen how would you feel? Motivated!
Every day, yes every day, do something that makes progress for your business. It could be to make a phone call, send an e mail, get an appointment, write an article, secure an order, have a consultation, get some coaching or simply write down some ideas as long as you are moving forward with your business. If you're not growing you're rotting!
3. Peer Group
"We don't want you getting in with the wrong crowd."
Don't underestimate the power of associating yourself with successful people.
If you want to improve your game you play with someone better right? So if you want to improve in business associate yourself with busy, productive, successful people not those who waste your time and drain your energy.
The reality is that not everyone will support you in your pursuit of business success. There may be outspoken critics, silent disapprovers and scaremongers who you must become immune to.
It's important that you don't isolate yourself. Seek out a coaching program or networking group where you will get the support you need. Build a team of carefully selected people who are secure in their own success and in harmony with your goals and aspirations.
Now that you are a "Mumpreneur" it's time to step up and accept the responsibility for managing your business and your family. After all probably one of the main reasons you started you own business was to be there more for your family. Don't let yourself get in your way of getting want you really want: business success AND time for the kids. Consider some coaching to help you stay on track and learn what you can do to help yourself. This says it all "A woman is like a tea bag; you don't know how strong she is until you put her in hot water!"
